Site Tips
- Refrain from typing in sticky caps, it's obnoxious and hard to read.
- Don't make your font size too large unless you are using headers, site titles, or want to make something stand out.
- ...At the same time, don't make your font size so small that people have to adjust it using their browser settings (ctrl + usually to make text larger; ctrl - to make text smaller.)
- Use one or two nice fonts on your layout.
- Have something to do and see at your site. A personal site or weblog is great, but nobody likes only reading about your trip to the mall or favorite things.
- Make a tasteful, original layout for your site. If you must use a pre-made layout or theme, try to alter it in some way to make it your own- while retaining proper credit to the creator, of course.
- Vary your layouts; try not to stick with one style all the time.
- Try not to have any pop ups on your page, including javascript prompts and ads.
- Do not type in all capital letters unless you want to make something stand out.
- Update your page as often as possible.
- Make your page colorful, but not too bright or dark. Use colours that go with each other nicely; do not pair a dark background with dark text colour, or a light background with a light text colour.
- Make sure everything matches.
- If you take something from someone else's page, make sure to credit them for it. A link is generally fine, but you might want to check with the person if the material is copyrighted.
- Use proper grammar.
- Do link checks frequently.
- Make sure your links work and are targeted correctly by putting target=_new or target=_blank in the link code.
- If you are a beginner, look around for a good free host with minimal ads.
- If you have a colored background, make sure your graphics have the same color or a transparent background.
- Don't forget to set your background, link, and font tags to match your colour scheme.
- Refrain from having music playing on your site unless there is a way to turn it off and it is not an obnoxious midi.
